By Adela Beasley

Prescription orthotics help millions of people everyday by giving them support in the foot, enabling correct walking. The device is a piece of plastic which is worn on the inside of the shoe to alleviate problems with the foot such as movement. These devices are also made of rubber, leather or cork. They are usually prescribed by podiatrists for patients who suffer with discomfort of the feet.

One would have to have an orthotic device specially made for the shape of your foot. Due to the fact that they are custom made, you would have to have more than one made if you wear more than one pair of shoes. This could prove to be quite an expensive mission, especially for women who wear fashion shoes. These devices are not the same as inner soles, so do not just go out and purchase such items off the shelf, as you could land up doing more harm to your feet than anything else, especially if you do indeed have a problem.

The devices should not be confused with over the counter inner soles sold for comfort of the foot. They are in fact made specifically for the individual. If you have one, you would be restricted to the shoes you wear as they are not able to be worn with all designs. Should you take them out, you will find that your shoes become uncomfortable to wear. When they are worn regularly, you will be bale to walk and run with comfort. This is because they will have been customized to fit your foot.

Orthotics support the mechanics of the foot, causing comfort in shoes as the patient stands, walks or runs. As it is worn on the inside of the shoe, no one can see it and it is not uncommon for people to wear them. They align the foot so that it works correctly.

Orthotics are usually used for patients who have a problem with their feet which lands up causing pain and discomfort. They can also accommodate structural problems of the foot. When custom made, they will take on the natural form of your foot. However, they are not able to rectify structural problems.

Many people of all ages wear these devices in their shoes. They are worn for many different reasons. Podiatrists are the specialists who prescribe orthotics for their patients. Usually a podiatrist is the first person you would visit when suffering from any discomfort in the feet. They are specially trained and will easily be able to tell you if there is something wrong. Should there be a serious problem, you will obviously be advised you to see a specialist.

Should you be experiencing any discomfort with your feet, it is best that you have it seen to as soon as possible. Your podiatrist will assist you with this. Foot problems are easy to work with and prescription orthotics are good for relieving pain from bunions and calluses. They can also assist a patient who is suffering from knee and shin pain.
