By Adela Beasley

If there is one thing that could definitely destroy a person's life that would substance abuse. Becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol can kill a person in so many ways. His health is going to suffer as well as his work and personal relationships. Knowing how serious the problem is, something should be done before things get worse. People with this kind of addiction have to submit themselves to drug and alcohol counseling pa.

There are now many types of programs that were made to help those individuals that have become heavily dependent on these substances. Each of these programs differs with regards to its length, approach, and even setting. For patients that could still manage themselves, outpatient treatment is usually recommended. They can still go to work or school as long they will religiously attend their therapy sessions.

Aside from attending therapy, there are also local support groups that one could get help from. These groups have hotlines that people could call if they need to talk to someone about their condition. They also offer free group therapy sessions that a person could attend if he needs help.

However, patients that are already in the worst condition would no longer be good for outpatient programs. It is already necessary for them to be confined so they will be monitored 24 hours a day. These people are usually taken to rehabilitation centers where there are doctors and other specialists that could help them out.

There are also places that you call sober houses where substance abuse patients can stay in. These places are considered as a halfway house because one is allowed to interact with others but is still slightly monitored. This is good for those that are almost ready to return home and live a normal life.

For the therapy, counselors use many types of therapies to help their patients. Three examples of therapies used would include cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and family therapy. The kind of therapy that would be recommended to a patient depends on the therapist's assessment.

There are also cases where in it would be necessary to use medications in the treatment of the patient. These medications are usually given to those that have become dependent on alcohol. These drugs work by forcing the patient to abstain from drinking any alcoholic beverage. One example of such medication is Antabuse. You also have acamprosate and topiramate.

When it comes to addiction, the best prognosis can be achieved if treatment was given the soonest possible time.
