Shakes and Smoothies for Better Health

By Ryan P. Bressler

Shakes and smoothies seem to be the hottest new thing to take the fitness world by storm. I mean yeah, protein shakes have been used by body builders for years but traditional protein shakes actually aren't that good for you. Continue reading to find out some of the scary ingredients found in traditional shakes and how you can replace those ingredients with healthy nutrient packed foods instead!

Protein shakes are an easy way to add extra protein your diet. Some experts suggest that diets high in protein may help people lose weight and build lean muscle. You can add many sources of protein to a shake such as organic plant based protein powder, grass fed gelatin, nuts and nutbutters, and some seeds such as chia and hemp. Some people even add raw organic free range eggs to their protein shakes!

It's easy to turn a plant based protein shake into a green smoothie with the addition of some tasty raw greens. Try adding spinach, kale, or avocado. You could also add freeze dried super foods such as wheatgrass, oat grass, and barley grass.

Plant based protein shakes are a perfect way to add super foods to your diet. My favorite super foods are coconut oil, raw honey, and raw cacao. You can also add super foods like spirulina, chlorella, and acai berry. Super foods are full of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and even antioxidants!

Avoid adding whey protein powders to a plant based protein shake, Whey is a highly processed animal product that does not generally contain live nutrients. Whey protein is also a NO GO for vegetarians. Try to avoid soy protein powders and milks as well. Some studies suggest that over consumption of soy can lead to negative side effects.

There you have it! Protein shakes can be the perfect way to prevent muscle soreness after a hard work out. They can also be a great way to sneak extra veggies and super foods into your diet. Simply avoid processed ingredients and you'll be on your way to making the healthiest protein shakes around!
